CIC's Glenn Hou Shares Insights on Spring Festival Consumption Trends

2026年03月09日

SHANGHAI, March 9th, 2026 —— The integration of culture, commerce, tourism, sports and exhibitions has fueled a robust start for consumption during the Spring Festival holiday. How have government-issued consumption coupons, well-planned mall activities and lottery events boosted the consumer market? What crucial insights can Shanghai Pudong, a representative observation sample, offer for the broader consumer market?

Recently, Glenn Hou, Founding Partner of CIC, shares his insights with Oriental Finance Channel’s 632 Observation Show.

Here are the key takeaways from the interview:

The "All-Day Travel" Consumer Behavior

Glenn highlighted the emergence of what he terms "all-day travel" as a fundamental shift in consumer behavior. "Today, when consumers go out, they are looking to fill their entire day—eating, drinking, entertainment, shopping, or catching a movie," he explained. This necessitates destinations that are not only rich in diverse commercial offerings but also uniquely differentiated. "Homogeneous experiences no longer appeal to consumers," Glenn noted, pointing to Pudong's distinct commercial districts—Lujiazui, Zhangyang Road, Qiantan—each attracting visitors with their own special events and novel experiences, thereby stimulating spending.

Online-Offline Integration: The New Growth Engine

Beyond offline events, Glenn emphasizes the critical importance of online-offline integration. In today's information-rich society, hotspot events can spread across social media within seconds. For instance, the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) has generated thousands of photo-angle guides on Xiaohongshu(rednote), while half-day and multi-day itinerary guides help consumers optimize their time efficiency. This digital-physical synergy enables visitors to accomplish more, thereby driving increased consumption.

New Formats Reshaping Retail Landscape

Regarding the evolution of retail, Glenn observed that new formats like the transformed Yonghui Superstores (adopting the Pangdonglai Supermarket model) and the newly opened third Sam's Club in Pudong share a common core: high-quality merchandise. "Thanks to modern logistics, especially cold chain development, global products can now reach domestic destinations within 24 hours," he stated. These stores also cater to the festive need for "one-stop shopping" for unique New Year's goods, offering convenience and variety.

Optimizing Consumer Voucher Strategies

On the topic of government-issued consumption vouchers, Glenn suggested a more targeted approach to unlock their full potential. "Voucher categories could be further refined for different age groups," he proposed. Beyond simple spending vouchers, "experience vouchers" could be more effective. He illustrated this with an interactive example: the Pudong Art Museum running a "like and share" campaign on its official WeChat account for free tickets. Such gamified engagement builds a community of highly-engaged consumers who are deeply connected to the IP or destination, fostering lasting loyalty and repeat visits.
