CIC’s Snow Zhang Share Insights on China’s Commercial Aerospace IPO Race

2026年07月10日

SHANGHAI, July 10th, 2026 —— China achieves a historic milestone in commercial space with the nation's first successful controlled recovery of a launch vehicle's first stage. As reusable rocket technology continues to evolve and low-Earth orbit satellite constellation deployment accelerates, the space economy has moved beyond early-stage conceptual exploration, gradually forming a complete industrial closed-loop spanning R&D and manufacturing, launch services, in-orbit operations, and ground-based applications. SpaceX's IPO has further fueled imagination about the industry's future. In China, commercial space has emerged as a core track within the country's strategic emerging industries, with leading enterprises having crossed the critical technology validation phase and entering a pivotal cycle of capacity expansion and large-scale commercialization.

Recently, Snow Zhang, Associate Director of CIC, shared exclusive insights with Time Finance on the current dynamics of private space companies racing toward capital markets, analyzing the deep industrial logic behind market segmentation, evolving policy frameworks, and valuation paradigm shifts.

Three Companies Queue for STAR Market | Regulatory Efficiency Improving

Currently, three commercial space companies are in the STAR Market IPO pipeline. All three received initial inquiries within one month of acceptance — a notably tight timeline by STAR Market standards. LandSpace, which filed its prospectus in late 2025, updated its prospectus on June 29th and has returned to "inquired" status.

Historically, most STAR Market IPOs required 9 to 18 months from acceptance to registration. However, since the implementation of the "1+6" reform, which introduced pre-review mechanisms and a "STAR Growth Tier" for hard-tech enterprises, review efficiency has improved significantly. Some strategically important companies with mature technology have secured approval in under three months.

Furthermore, the 2025 expansion of STAR Market's Listing Standard No. 5 to cover commercial space — accompanied by the release of the "Review Guidelines for Commercial Rocket Enterprises Applying STAR Market Listing Standard No. 5" — has established dedicated review rules for the sector. This addresses the long-standing challenge of commercial space companies being unable to access capital markets despite technological maturity due to lack of profitability. While review timelines are expected to accelerate overall, the industry's characteristics of high R&D investment, long industrial cycles, and complex engineering validation mean regulators will focus more closely on technological maturity and industrialization capabilities.

Industry Consolidation Begins | Capital Markets Favor Proven Players

The current wave of private space companies pursuing public listings signals that China's commercial space industry has entered a new phase. The policy environment continues to improve — commercial space is not only a national strategic emerging industry but also an emerging pillar industry. The commercial space standard system released in April 2026 has further clarified available policy support.

Commercial space is inherently characterized by high R&D investment, high manufacturing costs, and long payback periods, making secondary markets a critical financing channel for private space companies to advance to the next development stage. After years of competition, the industry is gradually consolidating around leading players. Companies with orbital launch capability, in-house engine development, batch manufacturing capacity, and stable order backlogs will be the first to attract capital market attention.

This IPO wave represents the beginning of industry differentiation and concentration — not merely another capital boom. Companies that can establish scale advantages, cost advantages, and sustainable operational capabilities within the industrial chain will gain long-term capital market recognition. As reusable rockets, low-orbit satellite internet, space computing, and aerospace data services accelerate, commercial space will evolve toward systematic industrial competition.

SpaceX IPO Establishes Valuation Anchor for Global Commercial Space

SpaceX's IPO serves as an important benchmark for domestic private space enterprises. The "rocket launch — satellite deployment — communication network — terminal services" commercial closed-loop that SpaceX has built provides a clear business model template for the global commercial space industry, offering capital markets an essential reference for understanding commercial space enterprise value.

SpaceX's IPO has established a valuation anchor and a new valuation framework for commercial space for Chinese companies. Investors can now reassess commercial space enterprises across dimensions including launch capability, satellite networks, operating revenue, user scale, and long-term platform value. SpaceX's successful listing demonstrates that the long-term value of commercial space lies in building sustainable space infrastructure platforms. If domestic companies can expand into satellite internet, space data services, laser communication networks, and space computing, their valuation logic will upgrade toward that of technology platform enterprises.

Moreover, SpaceX's IPO signals that industry competition is moving beyond technology validation toward integrated competition encompassing cost efficiency, scale delivery, commercial orders, operating revenue, and international capabilities — raising the barriers to entry.
