CIC's Sean Zhang Shares Insights on the Explosive Opportunities of AI Short Drama Virtual Characters

2026年08月06日

SHANGHAI, August 6, 2026 — The AI short drama The Girl Cropped Out has become a viral sensation across China’s digital entertainment space, with its virtual lead character amassing a combined total of over 520,000 followers on social media platforms. Buzz around the series has even outstripped that of many domestic entertainment artists, prompting widespread market commentary that the phenomenon officially heralds the arrival of the "Virtual Idol 2.0" era.

Powered by narrative-driven emotional resonance and ongoing social media operations, the AI short drama star-making model is rewriting user engagement dynamics and reshaping business models across the entire industry value chain, spanning short dramas, film and television, virtual idols, and artist and artist and talent management sector sector. In an exclusive interview with Cailian Press, Sean Zhang, Managing Director of CIC, delivered an in-depth analysis of the disruptions brought by the AI virtual star wave across entertainment sectors, as well as the new incremental growth opportunities emerging across the industrial ecosystem.

From Fixed Personas to Interactive Digital IPs: The Core of Virtual Idol 2.0

When asked about the fundamental differences between AI short drama characters and traditional virtual idols such as Luo Tianyi and A-SOUL, and his take on the "Virtual Idol 2.0" narrative, Sean Zhang noted that the core transformation lies in character building methodology and user connection patterns.

"Traditional virtual idols primarily build fan relationships through stage performances and fixed, pre-set personas. In contrast, AI short drama characters attract users through plot-driven emotional resonance, and maintain long-term long-term user retention through continuous social media operations," said Sean Zhang. "This shifts the user relationship from one-way following to a deeper bond marked by stronger interactivity, participation and a sense of companionship."

Sean Zhang emphasized that Virtual Idol 2.0 represents far more than a technological upgrade. It marks the evolution of virtual characters from fixed persona operations to long-term digital IPs capable of continuously generating diversified content and expanding interactive scenarios. AI not only dramatically lifts the efficiency of content production and daily operations, but also drives virtual characters toward more humanized, relatable, and interactive personas — enabling deeper user connections and unlocking diversified commercial scenarios including advertising, brand collaborations and gaming licensing.

Industry-Wide Reshaping and Value Chain Opportunities

On the impact of the AI short drama star-making model on existing industries and the emerging market opportunities along the value chain, Sean Zhang pointed out that the model essentially drives structural changes in both business models and production efficiency across the broader content industry.

On one hand, AI is pushing the content industry’s operating paradigm to shift from a work-centric model to a character-centric model. In the past, content value largely relied on downstream IP development after the success of a single work. AI-enabled virtual characters, through sustained, rapid content generation and targeted user operations, can greatly extend IP lifecycles and amplify long-term commercial value.

On the other hand, AI significantly lowers barriers to content production, improves the speed of content creation and iteration, and propels the industry toward greater industrialization and scaled development. The industry will see further polarization as a result: highly standardized content production and commercial scenarios are more amenable to large-scale replication via AI, while live-action content ecosystems remain irreplaceable in premium creative output, top-tier IP building and nuanced emotional expression.

From an industrial value chain perspective, the proliferation of AI virtual characters will drive growth across three tiers: upstream segments including AI foundation models, computing power and video generation technologies; midstream segments such as content production platforms, IP management and operations and talent incubation; and downstream monetization channels covering advertising, e-commerce and gaming.

Current Bottlenecks and Industry Outlook

Regarding the core bottlenecks hindering the maturation of the AI short drama star-making model, and the industry's development trajectory over the next 1–2 years, Sean Zhang stated that the AI short drama sector is still in its early stage, facing three key challenges in technology, content and commercialization.

Technically, character visual consistency, nuanced emotional expression and generation stability for long-form video content still require targeted improvement. On the content front, the production capacity surge driven by low entry barriers has intensified homogenized competition, and the ability to build influential, high-quality IP will be the key differentiator for market players going forward. Commercially, the path to sustainable long-term operation and monetization through user accumulation and retention still requires further market validation.

Looking ahead, the industry will gradually enter a phase of premium content upgrading and industrial maturation and industrial upgrading. Teams with integrated capabilities in IP building, technology application and user operation will gain decisive competitive advantages, and the core of industry competition will shift from improving production efficiency to building content assets with enduring long-term user value.
